RSV Vaccine|Respiratory Protection for Older Adults

Respiratory Syncytial Virus, commonly known as RSV, is a common respiratory virus that can affect people of all ages. Older adults, young children and individuals with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of developing more serious illness.

After infection, symptoms usually appear within 2 to 8 days. Early symptoms may include nasal congestion, runny nose and cough. In more severe cases, RSV may progress to a lower respiratory tract infection, such as bronchiolitis or pneumonia, causing wheezing, shortness of breath or breathing difficulties.

The RSV vaccine helps protect against lower respiratory tract disease caused by RSV. Clinical data has shown vaccine efficacy of 82.6% against RSV-related lower respiratory tract disease. For older adults with underlying long-term medical conditions, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, asthma, diabetes or heart disease, reported efficacy may be as high as 94.6%.

The vaccine does not currently require a booster dose and may help reduce the risk of hospitalisation. It has been approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
