20-valent Pneumococcal Conjugate Vaccine
Pneumonia is one of the major causes of death in Hong Kong. Pneumococcal infection, particularly infection caused by certain serotypes such as serotype 3, may lead to serious illness and a higher risk of complications.
Pneumococcal bacteria can cause a range of conditions, including middle ear infection and pneumonia. In more severe cases, they may lead to invasive pneumococcal disease, such as meningitis when the infection affects the membranes around the brain, or bacteraemia and sepsis when it enters the bloodstream. These conditions can be serious and potentially life-threatening.
The 20-valent pneumococcal vaccine covers 20 pneumococcal serotypes:
1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 8, 9V, 10A, 11A, 12F, 14, 15B, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F and 33F
With broader serotype coverage, the vaccine helps protect against pneumococcal disease and supports longer-term immune memory. It is given as a single-dose vaccination and may be administered at the same visit as the influenza vaccine or COVID-19 vaccine, subject to medical assessment.
The 20-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Medicines Agency (EMA).
This vaccine may be suitable for adults aged 18 or above, particularly those in higher-risk groups, including:
- Older adults
- Individuals with chronic lung disease
- Individuals with cardiovascular disease
- Individuals with diabetes
- Smokers
The 20-valent pneumococcal vaccine is usually given as one dose, subject to medical advice and individual health needs.
Common side effects of the pneumococcal vaccine are similar to those of many other vaccines. These may include redness, swelling, pain or warmth at the injection site.
Most reactions are mild and usually resolve on their own.
