15-valent Pneumococcal Vaccine
Pneumonia is one of the major causes of death in Hong Kong. Pneumococcal infection, particularly infection caused by certain serotypes such as serotype 3, may lead to serious illness and a higher risk of complications.
Pneumococcal bacteria can cause a range of conditions, including middle ear infection and pneumonia. In more severe cases, they may lead to invasive pneumococcal disease, such as meningitis, bacteraemia or sepsis, which can be serious and potentially life-threatening.
The 15-valent pneumococcal vaccine covers 15 pneumococcal serotypes:
1, 3, 4, 5, 6A, 6B, 7F, 9V, 14, 18C, 19A, 19F, 22F, 23F and 33F
It provides coverage against pneumococcal serotype 3 and supports protection against invasive pneumococcal disease, including pneumonia, acute otitis media, meningitis and sepsis.
The vaccine has been approved for use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the European Union.
Children under 2 years old
It is generally recommended to receive three primary doses at 2, 4 and 6 months, followed by one booster dose at 12–15 months.
Individuals aged 2 years or above
A single dose of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine is generally recommended, subject to medical advice and individual health needs.
Common side effects of the pneumococcal vaccine are similar to those of many other vaccines. These may include redness, swelling, pain or warmth at the injection site.
Most reactions are mild and usually resolve on their own.
