Liver Ultrasound Scan
Liver cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in Hong Kong, following lung cancer and colorectal cancer.
In the early stages, liver tumours are often small. As the liver itself has no pain receptors, early abnormalities may not be easily noticed. Symptoms such as upper abdominal pain may only appear when the tumour becomes larger and presses on surrounding tissues or nerves, by which time the condition may already be more advanced.
A liver ultrasound examination can help assess the size, surface and internal structure of the liver. It may help identify liver-related abnormalities such as cirrhosis, fatty liver changes or liver tumours.
This examination may be suitable for individuals who:
- Drink alcohol regularly or heavily
- Have liver disease, such as hepatitis B
- Have a family history of liver disease
- Are overweight, especially those with diabetes or high blood pressure
- Have symptoms suggestive of liver disease, such as yellowing of the skin or eyes, abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, dark urine or pale stools
- Have gallbladder disease or anaemia
- Are taking medicines that may potentially affect liver function
Reports are usually available within approximately 2–3 working days.
