SHINGRIX® Shingles Vaccine — 1 Dose
Many people mistakenly believe that shingles only affects older adults. In fact, the varicella-zoster virus, which causes shingles, can remain dormant in the body after a previous chickenpox infection and may reactivate later in life.
As the immune system naturally weakens with age, the risk of shingles may increase, particularly among older adults and people with weakened immunity. Individuals aged over 50, people with immune system conditions, people living with HIV, and those under long-term stress may have a higher risk.
The new-generation shingles vaccine helps protect against shingles and may reduce the risk of post-herpetic neuralgia and other shingles-related complications. Clinical studies have reported protection of over 90% in certain age groups.
Vaccination may also be considered for individuals who have previously had shingles, as it may help reduce the risk of future episodes.
Recommended groups include:
- Adults aged 50 or above
- Adults aged 18 or above who are at increased risk, such as people with chronic illnesses, those taking long-term steroids, or individuals under significant stress or with insufficient rest
This vaccine may be suitable for:
- Adults aged 50 or above
- Individuals who have previously had chickenpox
- Individuals with weakened immunity
- Individuals under high stress or with insufficient sleep
- People with chronic illnesses, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, lupus or cancer
This vaccine requires 2 doses to provide longer-term protection. The two doses are usually given 2 to 6 months apart.
Common side effects of the new-generation shingles vaccine are similar to those of many other vaccines. These may include redness, swelling, pain or warmth at the injection site. Most reactions are mild and usually resolve on their own.
