Pelvic Ultrasound Scan — Uterus, Ovaries and Bladder
A pelvic ultrasound scan is a common gynaecological examination. It uses non-invasive, radiation-free ultrasound imaging to assess the female reproductive system, including the uterus, ovaries, fallopian tubes and surrounding pelvic structures.
A pelvic ultrasound provides high-resolution imaging and is generally painless, non-invasive and free from radiation. It may help assess or identify the following women’s health concerns:
- Structural abnormalities of the uterus or ovaries
- Possible abnormalities involving the uterus, ovaries or bladder
- Non-cancerous growths, fibroids or cysts
- Possible causes of lower abdominal pain or abnormal bleeding
- Fertility-related concerns
- Pelvic infection-related conditions or suspected ectopic pregnancy
Regular pelvic ultrasound screening may be considered for women aged 35 or above.
A pelvic ultrasound, also known as a uterine ultrasound scan, may be recommended every 6 to 12 months if you experience any of the following:
- Frequent urination or a frequent urge to urinate
- Lower abdominal bloating or a suspected lump when touching the lower abdomen
- Abnormal vaginal bleeding, heavy periods or period pain
- Known uterine fibroids, uterine myomas or ovarian cysts
- Uncertainty about whether an intrauterine device is positioned correctly
- No gynaecological examination within the past 6 months
