Echocardiogram
An echocardiogram, also known as a heart ultrasound examination, can help assess the structure and function of the heart. It may provide information on heart size, heart muscle contraction, heartbeat, pumping function and heart valve movement.
This examination may help identify possible abnormalities, support the assessment of cardiovascular conditions, and assist with evaluation before or after certain heart procedures.
However, an echocardiogram does not show coronary artery disease directly. Image quality may also be affected in individuals who are significantly overweight or who have emphysema.
This examination may be suitable for individuals who:
- Have started to notice heart-related discomfort
- Have abnormal findings on a resting ECG
- Have been told they have a heart murmur during a routine health check
- Experience shortness of breath when walking or swelling in the legs
- Occasionally experience irregular heartbeat, chest pain, palpitations, chest tightness or shortness of breath
- Have hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
- Are older adults
- Please wear loose-fitting upper-body clothing to facilitate the examination.
- Please remove any upper-body accessories or jewellery before the examination.
