Q1: How accurate are these cancer marker tests?

A: Tumour marker tests are useful screening tools, but it is important to understand their limitations.

Different markers have different levels of sensitivity and specificity. For example, CA 15-3 may be associated with breast cancer monitoring, but it should not be used alone to diagnose cancer.

For the most accurate assessment, tumour marker results should be interpreted together with clinical symptoms, medical history, physical examination and imaging tests where appropriate.

A: Women aged 30 or above may consider paying closer attention to cancer screening.

If you have a family history of cancer, especially if a close relative was diagnosed at a younger age, you may wish to begin screening earlier. Please consult a doctor for personalised advice based on your risk factors.

Q3: Is any preparation required before the test?

A: Some tumour markers, such as CA 125, may be affected by the menstrual cycle. It is generally recommended to avoid testing during menstruation and arrange the test 5 days after your period has ended.

Q5: How often should I have this screening?

A: For general health monitoring, annual screening may be considered. Higher-risk individuals, such as those with a family history of cancer or known genetic risk factors, may require more frequent or more specific screening according to their doctor’s advice.

Q6: Can these tests replace routine imaging examinations?

A: No. Tumour marker testing should be regarded as a supplementary tool. It cannot replace imaging examinations such as mammography, ultrasound, endoscopy or other diagnostic investigations.

A more comprehensive cancer screening approach may involve both blood tests and imaging, depending on individual risk factors.

Q7: Does a slightly raised marker mean I have cancer?

A: Not necessarily. Many non-cancerous conditions, such as inflammation, infection and menstruation, may cause mild increases in tumour marker levels.

A doctor will interpret the result based on the degree of elevation, whether the level remains raised over time, your symptoms and other test findings.
